Guardianship
Guardianship is a court process that appoints someone to make decisions for a person who can no longer make them. It is a serious step, and often a last resort. We help families weigh the alternatives and, when guardianship is necessary, handle it with care.
Alternatives we explore first
- Durable powers of attorney
- Health care directives
- Trusts for property management
- Representative payee arrangements
- Supported decision-making
Types of guardianship
Plenary guardianship transfers all delegable rights. Limited guardianship covers only the specific rights the court removes. A guardianship of the property addresses finances only. We also assist with guardian advocacy for adults with developmental disabilities and with the annual reporting guardians must file with the court.
Working with your care team
We coordinate with physicians, geriatric care managers, and social workers so that the legal plan supports the practical plan for your loved one's care.
